Celebrating the Vanilla in Life

Vanilla cupcakes with various colors of frosting.

On November 10th, we celebrate National Vanilla Cupcake Day. At least, according to NationalDayCalendar.com. And I’m on board with this celebration!

I grew up a vanilla lover in a chocolate lover’s world. At a previous job, I could just see the disappointment and confusion on my boss’s face shortly after I was hired when I answered an important question… What’s your favorite kind of cake? She didn’t believe me when I said I like vanilla!

Similarly to the copywriter behind the vanilla extract sold at my local supermarket, I hold that vanilla is not the same thing as boring.

Do you know what vanilla absolutely is? It is constant. Dependable.

2020 has been a rough year. There has been so much uncertainty, so much change. It’s the perfect year to really enjoy “plain old vanilla.” We deserve something familiar, something comfortable!

Chocolate may be the popular dessert, the prom queen of sweets, but I’m ready to indulge in a vanilla cupcake and escape into something familiar and comforting.

While I eat my vanilla cupcake, I’m going to reflect on the vanilla things that make life worthwhile.

The simple pleasures that we take for granted. A smile. A sunset. The feeling of sand between my toes or the wind in my hair. The sound of a songbird. The scratch of pen on paper. The deep rumble of my cat’s purr.

What are the vanilla things in your life that you can celebrate today?
