How my network came through for me when I needed them

It finally happened to me. Like so many people in 2020, I lost my job. The position was eliminated for budget reasons. My boss and her boss want to write me references, no bridges burned, they just had to make hard choices.

That zoom meeting left me in shock. I’m still a bit in shock. It’ll take time to process being unemployed for the first time since I was 16.

But… like a lot of us on Medium, I’ve been cultivating other income streams besides the day job. Like writing on Medium! (I’ve made $1.60 in my first month, so I’m basically ready to buy a mansion.)

Jokes aside, yes, I do hope Medium will help me fill some of the gap after that last paycheck clears. But I’ve also been dipping my toes into consulting around marketing, social media, and fundraising. I’ve taken small jobs doing what I’ve spent years studying and practicing and it’s felt really good to help others.

I’m toying with the idea of just focusing on that and not even taking a next day job. While thinking about it, emailed a couple of friends and one immediately offered a small and quick job helping with their startup nonprofit.

After saying YES to that, I tweeted my news.
